THE IGNOMINY

THE IGNOMINY

With just the second instance of it's kind, Russia finds herself voted out of the UNHRC over reports of "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" by her troops in Ukraine...

With 93 votes in favour of and 24 against the resolution, the 58 abstentions weren't enough to upset the odds stacked against the said Eurasian nation...

In its second year of a three-year term of the 47-member council, the suspension bars Russia's voice and vote though her diplomats can still attend meetings and debates...

While no nation has been expelled from the primary membership of the UN ever as yet, only Indonesia had once withdrawn her participation for over one and half years, between 20 January 1965 and 19 September 1966...

As the world watched in dismay the shocking images of the real-time war coverage depicting the extent of devastation and bodies strewn in the streets or buried in mass graves that one couldn't probably recollect having seen in recent times, the counter allegations just do not add up to the aggressor's claim of it being a 'prank' or being 'stagemanaged.'...

So, as things stand it is difficult to not concur with the U.S. Secretary of State who said in connection with the U.S initiated resolution adopted by the 193-member General Assembly  that -
"A country that is perpetrating gross and systematic violations of human rights should not sit on a body whose job it is to protect those rights."

Whatever be the geo-political arguments and defense in favour of war, it is rightly said that it can never be an excuse, let alone the unfortunate humanitarian crises...

And therefore I would also agree with Ukraine’s UN ambassador quoting the Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel -
“Indifference is always the friend of the enemy, for it benefits the aggressor -- never his victim, whose pain is magnified when he or she feels forgotten.”...
