The act of slapping is suggestive of quite a few overtones including assertion of authority, or an indication to someone having crossed limits. Needless to say about it's propensity for trouble these days, a gaol may not be too far either...
Is it done? No, in my opinion, despite the fact that there may be several deserved ones walking amongst us, asking for it...
Attack may not always be the best form of defense. Just ponder over the aftermath, or if someone were to do it to you. The initial elation could wane off just like water on the duck's back. The recipient's hard face could even injure your palm. There's every chance of feeling some regret or guilt, as to err is humane...
The consequences. In our times, when all eyes are focussed on everyone and everything under the sun, like it or not, you just can't slap-warm your hands and go about with business as usual. Retribution, revenge and social media are always at close quarters. You are liable to be avoided and abhorred, not to speak of being badmouthed for variable lengths of time. The fact that I am writing this, unrelated in any way whatsoever to the recent incident, is a case in point...
And finally, where would you go after the episode? Just this one, or would you consider repeating it? Would you be filled with remorse, regret, and think of a sorry and/or a patch up? Difficult questions to answer off hand. Probably it all happens in "that fraction of a second." It is therefore wise to err on the side of omission than opt for a transient feeling of "toxic superiority."...
