VALOUR IS BUT DUTY
If there was one right man at the right place at the right time on September 11, 2001, it was retired Colonel Cyril Richard Rescorla, VP of the corporate security of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. The ex-military combat expert led by example of courage and selflessness putting the lives of his colleagues ahead of his own, and his timely preparedness and planning saved the lives of about 2700 employees from over 70 storeys...
Cornwall born Rescorla joined the British Army in 1957 at the tender age of 18, and fighting communists in Rhodesia for four years opted to wear the US uniform along with his American friend for life, Dan Hill, to fight communism in Vietnam...
In the wake of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am 103 over Scotland and the failed 1993 WTC attack, Rescorla's advice for upping security and relocation respectively of Morgan Stanley had fallen on deaf ears. He had identified the twin towers, symbol of American economic power, as a vulnerable potential target housing thousands with few escape routes...
Nevertheless, Rescorla got down to planning safety procedures and evacuation drills and rehearsals, for all Morgan Stanley staff, in the event of any future contingency...
Overriding directions from authorities on 11 September 2001 for the staff to stay put, Rescorla decided to carry out the plan he had in mind in order to protect the people he was entrusted with. Rescorla never came out of the building, but it was precisely his preparedness that saved innumerable other lives on that fateful day...
Let us all pay our homages to this great soul on his 83rd birthday anniversary today...
