A TOUGH CALL

The following has nothing to do with what Hoda Kotb's quote says, but just a thought that came to my mind...

Quite often the terms, 'stupid' and 'crazy' are used synonymously...

A person could be said to be stupid or crazy if they do not share the same perspectives and patterns of behavior characteristic of a particular group...

'Stupidity' is akin to deficiency in intelligence, leading to inadequate application and reasoning in dealing with issues of import. You may consider someone stupid who fails to understand common proven knowledge and established norms...

'Craziness' is something wherein one reasons adequately, but from strange viewpoints, and acts in a strikingly weird manner. A crazy person is one who has irrational beliefs on things that haven't been confirmed or otherwise...

Stupid people generally act in an ignorant manner. A person who cannot tell the right time, for example, could therefore be described as stupid...

As against that, we have had several great personalities, scientists and philosophers who have been described as eccentric, strange and even crazy, but never as stupid. A few may use "crazy" to ridicule those who hold beliefs they don't concur with...

All things considered, I suppose the line of demarcation is neither too sharp, nor too narrow. A wide overlap does exist, perhaps...

Choosing between eccentricity and foolishness is always going to be challenging... 🙂
