MAJOR DHYAN CHAND
(29 Aug 1905 - 3 Dec 1979)

The "Wizard of Hockey" Major Dhyan Chand is considered to be the greatest hockey player that India has ever produced. His birth anniversary is celebrated as the National Sports Day...

Born in Allahabad, UP, this day in 1905, he followed the footsteps of his father Subedar Sameshwar Dutt Singh by joining the Indian Army at the age of 16...

His first coach Pankaj Gupta, impressed with his shining moon-like stick prowess, renamed Dhyan Singh as Dhyan Chand...

He rose to his potential in the army tourneys and regimental games which catapulted him into the Indian Army team to the tour of New Zealand in 1926...

The mercurial centre-forward that he was, Dhyan Chand led India to a Olympic Gold hat-trick from 1928 to 1936, at Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Berlin respectively. His brother Roop Singh played alongside him in 1932 and 1936. It is said that he did not wear shoes in the final match of the Berlin Olympics to gain pace and to be quicker, a match that India won swamping Germany 8-1...

Dhyan Chand scored over 1000 goals in his entire career, and remains the only hockey player so far to have been awarded the Padma Bhushan...

Dhyan Chand retired from the army In 1956 as a Major. He soon assumed charge as the Chief Hockey Coach at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala...

His son Ashok Kumar, India's inside-right, is the third family member to have represented India in Olympics. Though unlucky not to have an Olympic gold to his name, Ashok Kumar saw India through in the World Cups, 1971 Bronze at Barcelona, 1973 Silver 1973 at Amsterdam and 1975 Gold at Kuala Lumpur...

As fate would have it, the legendary Dhyan Chand was reportedly a forgotten and ignored sportsperson, as he passed away in New Delhi AIIMS, on 3 December, 1979, losing his battle against liver cancer...

India's highest sporting honour, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is named after him...
