O'HARE TRAGEDY - THIS DAY 61 YEARS AGO
It was this day in 1961, exactly 61 years ago, which witnessed an ill-fated Northwest Orient Airlines Lockheed L-188 Electra aircraft crash within no time after take-off from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport...
The Milwaukee-Chicago-Tampa-Miami Flight 706 had a normal take-off at 8:55 AM from O'Hare till reaching an altitude of 100 feet when witnesses heard a changed engine sound. Soon the aircraft began banking starboards, and as it climbed to 300 feet the bank angle rose to over 50°. The depressed wing hitting high tension cables, the aircraft stumbled upon an embankment, got cartwheeled onto it's nose, and with the separation of the front fuselage went up in flames along with all it's 32 passengers and 5 crew members, in a matter of just two minutes...
Air travel has no doubt made rapid strides over the decades, both in efficiency as well as safety, but it has had it's share of mishaps too. The chances of being rescued in such an eventuality being remote, I consider every flight to be an adventure, right from taxiing to a successful landing. I shall always remain in awe of the crew inside the cockpit, their responsibilities being second to none at those points in time...
In memory of all the 37 lives cut short by the tragedy of 17th September 1961...
