INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE

International Day of Non-Violence, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, came into being in 2007 with the UN General Assembly passing a resolution to that effect, with the combined efforts of Iranian Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi from 2004 and the government of India. The day envisages to spread the message of non-violence, of peace, tolerance and understanding as advocated by India's global icon who inspired millions...

From the Indian standpoint, two of her tallest leaders, born 35 years apart, share the common birth date of 2nd October...

While Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, of Porbandar, stood for honesty and discipline, Lalbahadur Shastri, of Mughalsarai, was an epitome of ethics and self-respect...

While Gandhi showed the importance of non-violence, Shastri was the crusader of the farmers...

Both were deeply involved in India's freedom movement, with unquestionable sincerity in accordance with their wisdom, steely resolve and conviction at that point in time...

With the attributes of humility, simplicity, sincerity and honesty in abundance, both have been known to have exibited clarity and calmness even in the most adverse of situations...

Nobody is born perfect, but one can always strive for it. Both of them did attempt that, unwavering in their respective principles. While it can be arguably said that Gandhi was the architect of India's freedom, Shastri, India's second Prime Minister, rescued her from the food crisis and the war of 1965...

While Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948, Shastri passed away, reportedly under mysterious circumstances till date, in Tashkent on 11 January 1966...

If all of us could try and emulate even a microscopic fraction of the virtues and qualities the duo stood for, it would be a fitting tribute to the great souls on their birthday today...

Wishing you a very Happy Gandhi Jayanti & Shastri Jayanti...
