WORLD FOOD DAY
World Food Day, 16th of October, marks the day of founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It's arm, the World Food Programme, won the Nobel Prize in 2020 for it's efforts in conflict zones, both in terms of food supplies and it's role against use of hunger as a war-weapon...
The theme for 2022 is -
"Leave No One Behind."
One would always do well to remember the school time prayer where one simply chanted "...and thank you God for the food we eat."
At a time when we hear chants of varieties of nature conservation, as well as the recently witnessed grain disbursement from the current conflict zone for instance, I suppose we should be conserving and be thrifty about food reserves as well...
We often tend to buy more than we need, and let edibles go unutilised. This is a waste of effort, materials, processing and transportation, including increase in greenhouse gas emissions...
The estimated global 14% shortfall of food between harvest and retail includes 'Food Loss' - portion from harvest up to, but not including, the retail level - and 'Food Waste' which occurs at the retail or consumer level. Thus the entire spectrum, from farmer to the end user, needs to be vigilant in this regard. This is essential in a world where millions of people go hungry every day...
Adopting a healthier, more sustainable diet, buying only what you need, storing and labelling food wisely, making use of your leftovers, composting waste, supporting local food producers, keeping soil and water clean are few of the ways that we could be proactive...
Let us on this day pledge to renew our respect for food, to have the will to share and donate food whenever possible which could help in combating hunger in the long run, in our own small way, for the people and for the world...
