A YEAR'S MIND


An anniversary, ironically, worth forgetting passed by on 24th February as the war entered it's 2nd year. Not to forget the loss of soldiers, lives and property and the enormous costs of rebuilding, some random thoughts came to mind...

A certain uncertainty has seemingly crept in. People the world over should realize that they have absolutely no control over the future. The displaced Ukrainians must never have in their wildest of dreams imagined, just a year ago, of things coming to such a tragic pass. As also the safety issues for neighbouring nations due to the distinct possibility of nuclear mishaps...

With the serenity in Europe disturbed, nations have been rather compelled to think about arms revamping after many years of military calm. Prior to the present conflict it was generally thought that warfare had gone hi-tech, with drones or UAVs ruling the roost. A security expert from UK opined that conventional warfare is back as of now, with reference to the present conflict...

The war beginner's goal of hurting NATO probably didn't quite suceed; the latter's alliance seems to be getting stronger, with supply of aid in all forms, sanctions on the former and with two additional aspirants emerging for the latter. While NATO and EU claim preparedness for the long haul, the long-term cohesiveness in cooperation could be a daunting task...

The divide dissolved by the fall of the Berlin Wall appears to be developing again, with reshuffling of Western businesses and the nuclear power's increasing proximity to Asian and South East Asian nations. The gulf has perhaps widened between states supporting Ukraine and those not...

The ongoing conflict has underlined the issues facing an interdependent world; the paucity of foodgrains and cooking oil in Africa and cold dwellings in Europe, to mention two. With costs escalating, countries are seeking ways to solve their food and energy crises. While returning to coal is an immediate option, the continued conflict may compel nations to explore possibilities of renewable energy...

Being optimistic for wiser counsel to ultimately prevail, I sign off with the quote I read somewhere - 

"One can go to any length to defend or justify a war, but it can never be an excuse."...
