International Mother Language Day is observed on 21st February, with an objective to preserve and protect all languages of the world. UNESCO and UNGA, on Bangladesh's initiative, decided the date which thus came into being in 2000...

The role of language in any civilizational growth cannot be overemphasized. It is to the credit of we humans to have developed the galaxies of this tool of communication, each unique to the various areas of our planet's inhabitable surface...

It is reported that quite a few languages are on the verge of extinction with around 40% population having scarce access to education in vernacular. The day aims to highlight the importance of mother tongue-based education system. Teachers with the aid of technological advances can augment learning process in these directions. Remote learning during COVID-19 times' school closures is an excellent case in point...

The theme for this year is -
“Multilingual education – a necessity to transform education."

There exists a politico-historical angle to the genesis of this day. A post independence linguistic clash ensued between West Pakistan and East Pakistan after the former declared Urdu, in 1948, as the national language, which unfortunately didn't go down well with the latter. Protests extended well upto February 1952, when things took an ugly turn with students of University of Dacca martyred by the authorities...
Under pressure, Bengali was acknowledged in 1956 as the second official language. With the birth of Bangladesh, in 1971, Bengali became her national language. The sacrifice of the students (of 1952) is observed this day as Language Movement Day, a national holiday in Bangladesh. The Shaheed Minar monument near Dhaka Medical College stands in memory of the departed souls...
