INDEPENDENCE DAY - BANGLADESH 🇧🇩

Over five decades ago, with the Cold War on, a new nation was born in the Indian subcontinent - Bangladesh - putting an end to the violence and oppression unleashed by the then West Pakistan upon East Pakistan...

From partition in 1947, and over 1500 kilometers apart, the two Pakistans were quite different, be it population, culture or political outlook, with East Pakistan tending towards liberalism...

The 1951 Bengali language issue added fuel to the fire, and two decades later, as is said, 'a holocaust unmatched since Hitler' began in March 1971. The West's military crackdown on the East, annulling the results of the 1970 elections, led to the nationalists forming their own guerilla army led by the Mukti Bahini. Along with the Indian forces East Pakistan got transformed into Bangladesh nine months later, on 16th December 1971...

Bangladesh defying all odds of poverty, natural disasters, refugee crises and world attention, has become one of the world's economic success stories. She has been hailed as one of the most successful nations by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in 2015. With an annual growth of over 6% for the past decade, she runs a close second to China in the garment industry...

The story of Bangladesh would be incomplete without mentioning Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, regarded as one of the most charismatic leaders of the 20th century. Remembered as the "Father of the Nation", Tungipara born Bangabandhu was a patriot, freedom fighter, politician, philosopher, and above all a human being par excellence who guided his nation during her darkest hours. He was assassinated along with few other family members on 15th August 1975...

Two women have since dominated Bangladeshi politics for years, viz. Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, and former PM Khaleda Zia, being in and out of power...

India's support for a neighbour's cause and it's sequelae reflected the Indian values of revolution and democracy, something that still bears testimony to the friendship and cordiality between India and Bangladesh...
