WORLD WATER DAY
It is since 1993 that UN began observing 22nd of March as World Water Day. Just another official occasion for us all to thank nature for her generous gift of water, the elixir of life...
The theme for 2023 is -
"Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis."
While globally accepted as indispensable for human life, the past two decades have seen heated debates on whether water should be acknowledged as a human right. UNGA in 2010 adopted a landmark resolution recognizing “the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of the right to life and all human rights.”...
Having said that, the scope, content, monitoring and implementation aren't easy tasks, as we know of nations in conflict for the same cause. Also, one should not forget to respect the rights of nature, of other species, and of water bodies, who all have their rights as well. How would one address the conflicts that might arise between different sets of rights? Who would speak on behalf of nature and other species, and on which platform? How would the distribution be?...
In short, all these clearly suggest that purely an anthropocentric viewpoint is perhaps foolhardy, and that further research and thinking by level headed people are absolutely necessary...
In addition to it's role in various industries ranging from chemicals, food, paper, transport, energy and nuclear plants etc., water aids survival of life in the rivers, lakes, and oceans, including the physiologies of both plant and animal kingdoms...
Making up 70% of our planet, water resources are not unlimited and therefore needs to be used judiciously. Improper handling along with increasing world population and water shortage is a sure recipe for health hazards, eventually leading to perishment of vegetation, seasons, fauna, and the human race...
