REMEMBERING A NAM PIONEER


MARSHAL J. B. TITO
(8 May 1892 - 4 May 1980)

War hero Tito managed to transform and unite a primarily agricultural Yugoslavia with socio-economic developments, education, transport, power, communications etc. into an industrialized hub...

Tito managed to keep USSR at arm's length as Yugoslavia emerged as an East-West zone of ease and comfort during the cold war, allowing her citizens unhindered passage, so much so that the Yugoslavian passport was one of the most sought after...

Militarily the 4th largest European nation then, with a commendably low crime rate, Tito successfully raised Yugoslavia to a pedestal in the continent comparable then to the way people regard the US or Canada or Australia today. A place willing to embrace, with shelter, food, work and leisure for one and all...

Tito had his share of followers and detractors both in his nation - the liberals for his anti-Nazi stance and prosperity; but the 'authoritarian' for conservatives in Croatia and Slovenia...

Leading the Non-Aligned Movement and hosting it's first conference in Belgrade in 1961 propelled Tito’s influence beyond the Yugoslavian and European boundaries, thus emerging as a morning sunshine for nations walking the tight rope held by warring powers...

Tito passed away, due to infective gangrenous complications, at the Medical Centre of Ljubljana, this day in 1980...

It is hardly any surprise that all of NAM leaders attended what became the world’s largest state funeral...

It is said that Tito had sent a letter as below to Stalin -

“Stop sending people to kill me. We’ve already captured five of them, one of them with a bomb and another with a rifle…If you don’t stop sending killers, I’ll send one to Moscow, and I won’t have to send another.”

Stalin reportedly stopped thereafter, keeping the above letter in his desk till his own demise...
