FAREWELL FIRST HALF 2023
While we would all be, at the stroke of midnight, ushered into the second half of 2023, a few words on June's last day wouldn't be out of place, especially since the day has witnessed several notable events in history, right from the official opening of the Tower Bridge in 1894 to Donald Trump's visit in 2019 to North Korea, he becoming the first sitting POTUS to do so...
Three events in my opinion deserve mention amongst the many that the day incorporates -
WORLD ASTEROID DAY, in memory of the Siberia Tunguska blast in 1908, said to be the earth's biggest encounter with an asteroid. The creative team of the 2014 sci-fi thriller "51 Degrees North" formed a foundation in 2015 to celebrate the world’s first International Asteroid Day, which was duly recognized by the UN in 2016...
Pete Cashmore's platform "Mashable" began the WORLD SOCIAL MEDIA DAY in 2010. Starting with Andrew Weinreich's Sixdegrees in 1997, LinkedIn in 2003, Facebook in 2004, Twitter in 2006, WhatsApp in 2014 to the latest Lemon8 in 2023, the popular yet scrutinized, SM has become a reflexly essential household item for trendy communication, commerce and entertainment...
It is since 2018 that the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PARLIAMENTARISM is observed by the UN to commemorate the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) this day in 1889, with an aim to bring together various parliaments in terms of accountability, transparency, peace and human rights along with global interactions. The theme for 2023 theme is "Parliaments for the Planet."
From an Indian standpoint, this day marks the arrest of M. K. Gandhi for the first time, in South Africa (1914), the passing away of the "Grand Old Man Of India" and former Member of UK Parliament Dadabhai Naoroji (1917) and the birthday of the world's foremost solid state and materials chemist and father of Indian nanotechnology, Bharat Ratna Dr. C. N. R. Rao...
