HAND OF GOD & THE GOAL OF THE CENTURY


It was this day, 37 years ago, that a legend scored the most beautiful goal in soccer history just minutes after it's most controversial one, demonstrating the extremes of a sportsman, the likes of whom the world would perhaps never see again...

"The Hand Of God" refers to the controversial 51st-minute goal, and "The Goal Of The Century" to the spectacular 55th-minute one, both scored by Argentina's Diego Maradona against England in the quarter finals of the 1986 edition of the FIFA World Cup, Mexico...

While the first goal was "a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the Hand of God", the second one was a sheer masterpiece...

Whereas the debate on God would continue, any event or phenomenon that is inexplicable would find it's rightful place with the Almighty; that's fair enough, even as the issue would assume a socio-psychological significance in the political arena...

Taking refuge in Him, Maradona ascribed the illegal goal as a "symbolic revenge" for Argentina's defeat against the UK in the Falklands War four years earlier...

Nineteen years after said World Cup, Maradona revealed, on his hosted La Noche del 10 programme, that it was actually the "Hand Of Man."...

Maradona never regretted what he did, and in fact players from both teams later agreed that it was difficult to ignore the political buildup that existed then...

One got the feeling that the gifted Maradona wasn't able to manage the level of fame to which he rose. And fortunately with the present technology and discipline we would probably never hear of such 'Hands' again...

All said and done, from the purist's point of view, Maradona was a great player in whom sportsmanship left a lot to be desired; and the "Hand Of God" goal was perhaps the sole reason, unfortunately of mammoth proportions, for that impression...

May the Almighty rest the departed soul in eternal peace...

November 8th is observed as International Day Of Radiology as a tribute to the great German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen for his discovery of X-Rays in 1895.. The 1845 born Nobel Laureate of 1901, Röntgen majored in Physics and completed his PhD at the University of Zurich.. Discovering X-rays accidentally while using cathode rays for images of his wife’s hand, which depicted the bones and the wedding ring, Röntgen had made a giant leap for mankind in medical diagnosis..
