WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY

14th June is observed as World Blood Donor Day, since 2005, in honour of the Austrian-American immunologist and pathologist, Karl Landsteiner (14 June 1868 - 26 June 1943). Landsteiner was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his development and discovery of the ABO blood group system and modern blood transfusion...

It is roughly estimated that blood is needed every five seconds for someone around the world, be it an accident, burns, surgery, cancer, chronic illnesses, blood diseases and the like...

The need for blood is thus constant, and blood donors help patients of all ages from all backgrounds on a day to day basis...

Technological advances have helped blood donations yield several specific blood fractions. Whole blood donation (which is commonly known to us) includes all of the basic four constituents - red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Also, packed Red Blood Cells, Platelet and Plasma donations can be done specifically...

Since advances in medicine have yet to find a substitute for blood, the elixir of life,  the act of blood donation can be said to be an act of saving lives...
