INTERNATIONAL MOON DAY

This day in 1969 marked a milestone for humankind when NASA's Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Alden Armstrong and Edwin Eugene Aldrin attained immortality by setting their feet on earth's natural satellite after landing in a place that they later named 'Tranquility Base', even as the 'forgotten astronaut' Michael Collins flew the command module around the moon...

An UNGA Resolution of the 9th of December 2021 ratified 20th of July 2022 to be observed as the first International Moon Day, in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space...

The theme for the inaugural year was 'Lunar Exploration Coordination and Sustainability', focusing the need for joint efforts and sustainable practices in space exploration. The theme on its anniversary today is -

'Beginning the New Lunar Journey for Humanity.'

A world beyond our own at about 100 kilometres above terra firma, 'space' will continue to fascinate mankind, more so because our solar system is just a tiny speck in the infinite galaxy...

However, one wonders that even if we were to surmount the ordeals of rocketing up there, would we really be comfortable, what with the severe temperatures, radiation, and the lack of air, water and gravity that we all are so very much used to?...

With the accomplished ones like Branson, Bezos and Musk having shown interest in this regard, days of space travel could well be a distinct possibility, with lovely Luna possibly emerging as a junction for travel to other planets and stars...

As for now Moon, the revolving mystifying beauty, should thank it's 'stars' for being relatively beyond man's physical reach, thus continuing to captivate and inspire poets, philosophers and romanticists from afar, quite far from the spheres of influence of our earth... 😀😀
