NATIONAL SIMPLICITY DAY

National Simplicity Day is in memory of American author, environmentalist, philosopher, naturalist, poet, historian, surveyor, and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau, who was born this day in 1817...

A staunch advocate of simple living, Thoreau wrote a number of well known books on the subject. "Walden", his most popular one, is said to be a great treatise on simple living in natural surroundings...

With time one invariably realizes that simplicity is a virtue augmenting peace and self appreciation. Rather than a sacrifice by any stretch of imagination, it paves the way to differentiate between importance and abundancy, to getting rid of everything that is superfluous...

"Simple living and high thinking" is a familiar adage passed on to us by our elders. Simplicity in everything that we think or do, with self and others as well...

Simplicity can vary from person to person,  the best version being that which endows contentment, relatively independent of situations and circumstances...

The present day world, though well equipped with cellphones, laptops and other trendy electronic gadgets, fails to be conducive to peace and quiet...

Though belonging to the ages, Thoreau's works tell us to slow down, simplify life and to savour every moment of each day. "Walden" tells us all about Thoreau's experiment of two years in the woods near Concord, Massachusetts, during which he built his own cabin, raised his own food, and lived a simple life in nature...

"As you simplify your life the laws of the universe will be simpler, solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness."
