WORLD BIOFUEL DAY

August 10th is observed as World Biofuel Day since 2015, to promote awareness of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to fossil ones. While the day honours German engineer Sir Rudolf Diesel's successful usage of peanut oil to operate a diesel engine, this day in 1893, he wouldn't have possibly dreamt of a 'food vs fuel' debate over a century later...

Produced in quick time from renewable biowaste, the most common biofuels are corn ethanol, biodiesel and biogas from organic byproducts. In addition to relieving the strain on the nonrenewable fossil fuels, biofuels ensure a cleaner environment with a lower carbon footprint along with an employment generating potential...

Some disadvantages, perhaps surmountable, are water, agricultural land, storage space and labour cost...

The two current warring nations Russia and Ukraine, responsible for around a quarter of globally traded wheat and barley, 15% of corn and over 60% of sunflower oil, have brought the food vs fuel dilemma to the fore. The morality of burning food grains for vehicles as also it's effects on world food crisis, have raised serious concerns...

All fuels should be handed judiciously with minimal wastage. Traffic congestion due to bad roads, accidents, traffic overload, construction, incorrect pedestrian walk or holding up traffic need attention...

Talking of traffic, just a digression in jest - news has it that there is 'traffic jam' on the Moon too as India's Chandrayaan-3 seeks to land on the lunar surface, with several global scientific modules buzzing with activity... 😀😀
