THE SUICIDE STOPPER


We always find humans, both at their best and worst, be in awe of the former quality and in abhorrence of the latter. And thus when I received the video clip enclosed below, sent by a friend of mine, decided to find out more...

A 79-year old retired Japanese police officer, Mr. Yukio Shige, has taken up the mantle of a suicide dissuader, in the full know that his nation is, reportedly, among the top ones in this regard...

Known as "Chotto Matte Man" (meaning 'Hold on, wait Man') and armed with binoculars Mr. Shige has saved nearly 800 lives till date, patrolling the popular tourist sites of Tojinbo cliffs on the Sea of Japan along with like-minded volunteers, keeping a constant look out for potential 'offenders'...

After retirement in 2004, Shige's passion takes him to those unfortunate ones harboring the belief that ending everything was the only option left, the latter then finding their way into one of his owned six apartments for rehabilitation purposes, to hopefully re-enter the mainstream of their lives...

Salutes to this noble samaritan...

The day was chosen during the 21st World Congress of Neurology held in Vienna on September 22, 2013 under the aegis of World Federation of Neurology, which incidentally was also formed on 22 July, in 1957... November 8th is observed as International Day Of Radiology as a tribute to the great German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen for his discovery of X-Rays in 1895.. The 1845 born Nobel Laureate of 1901, Röntgen majored in Physics and completed his PhD at the University of Zurich.. Discovering X-rays accidentally while using cathode rays for images of his wife’s hand, which depicted the bones and the wedding ring, Röntgen had made a giant leap for mankind in medical diagnosis.. International Day of Radiology (IDoR) was first celebrated in the year 2012 with the combined efforts of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR)..
