KAMALADEVI CHATTOPADHYAY

Born in Mangalore to a district collector-social worker couple Ananthaya Dhareshwar and Girijabai, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was a visionary who played stellar roles in the freedom movement and in shaping the further course of independent India...

Widowed at the age of 14, Kamaladevi remarried, at 20, the well-known poet-playwright-actor Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Sarojini Naidu's brother...

With proficiency in several languages Kamaladevi started her career as a social worker. Joining the Indian National Congress in 1922 during the freedom struggle, she was imprisoned for her participation in the Salt Satyagraha movement in 1930...

Back to social work after independence, Kamaladevi was instrumental in the furtherance of Indian arts, crafts, handlooms and culture that languished under the British rule in India. She founded the All India Handicrafts Board and the Indian National Theatre, in addition to being a pioneer of women’s rights and upliftment and cooperative movements...

The first lady to have contested elections to the Indian Parliament, Kamaladevi authored several books, of which “Inner Recesses Outer Spaces,” “An Indian Looks at America,” and “The Glory of Indian Handicrafts" remain the notable ones...

The 1966 Ramon Magsaysay awardee for Community Leadership, Kamaladevi who received the Padma Bhushan in 1955 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, two of the highest civilian awards in India, passed away this day, 1988, in Bombay...

Kamaladevi was honoured by Google with a doodle on her 115th birthday, on 3 April 2018...

Kamaladevi's legacy continues to inspire many of us by way of the various organizations and institutions she founded for future generations...
