INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

The first International Day Of The Girl Child was observed in 2012 after the UNGA recognized the efforts of the Beijing Declaration during the 1995 World Conference on Women, the first of it's kind to highlight the issue of girls’ rights...

The theme for 2023 is -
"Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-Being."

Gender bias has been since long, in every nation in some form, with various levels of discernability, the denial of proper access to education, health services and employment being the most common issues. Restrictions on personal choices and family life, lower salaries, gender-based violence and harassment are other issues aggravated by poverty and conflicts...

It is unfortunate that even today we have activisms on "saving the girl child." With almost no nation exempt, women and girls still face adverse laws and diktats, making equality a mountainous task...

Patriarchy is said to be the main reason for gender bias. I however feel that the bio-genetic differences leading to work segregation are insufficient to justify male dominance. While workplace and political space still boast of male preponderance, there are some nations with laws to prevent women workforce, and some with no laws to protect pregnant women from being shown the pink slip...

Technological advances should help create the necessary access to education, healthcare, learning of skills and equal opportunities to ensure freedom from all forms of discrimination, exploitation, harassment and crimes against the girl child...

The day thus serves as a gentle reminder to the various authorities to strive in earnest in the form of reformative policies and programmes to ensure a fair and level playing field...

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD
