INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN


25th November is observed since 1981 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, in memory of the three Mirabal sisters - Patria, Minerva and María Teresa of the Dominican Republic who revolted against the Latin American tyrant Rafael Trujillo - who were assassinated this day in 1960...

The theme for 2023 is -
"UNITE. Invest to prevent violence against women and girls."

Womens' participation is one of the criteria of a vibrant democracy. However, they still face bias in several walks of life, across the world. The need of the hour is to change the perspectives of the century bygone and come up anew for the remainder of the 21st...

Oppression of women has been in existence since time immemorial, the patriarchal lineage perhaps being the prime reason. Sedentism, division of labour, conflicts, wars etc. have helped contribute to male dominance in societies with consequent demotion of women’s status and importance...

Violence against women and the girl child remains one of the most prevalent human rights violations around the world. And due to the 'associated social stigma and shame' such cases remain unreported, giving a fillip of sorts to the perpetrators...

It is estimated that almost one in three of the fairer sex experience some physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lives, be it domestic, workplace, societal or online spaces. A rise noted post-pandemic, conflicts and climate change, digitalization and anti-feminism too figure in the incriminatory list...

While the issue demands quick responses, the global commitment to counter the menace still leaves a lot to be desired. In-depth understanding, calling out on misogyny, support for women’s rights and effective laws are few steps towards the said goal...

Man and woman being complementary, there is absolutely no justification for any such violence. Progress is impossible without change; and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything...

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY

November 8th is observed as International Day Of Radiology as a tribute to the great German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen for his discovery of X-Rays in 1895.. The 1845 born Nobel Laureate of 1901, Röntgen majored in Physics and completed his PhD at the University of Zurich.. Discovering X-rays accidentally while using cathode rays for images of his wife’s hand, which depicted the bones and the wedding ring, Röntgen had made a giant leap for mankind in medical diagnosis.. International Day of Radiology (IDoR) was first celebrated in the year 2012 with the combined efforts of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR)..
