INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

3rd December is observed as International Day Of Persons With Disabilities since 1992. The theme for 2023 is -
"United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities."

Despite measures around the world to improve bearability, the disabled person still finds the going tough, with stigma and self-confidence coming in the way of opportunities as the 'identity' tends to undermine the person's abilities...

Capabilities and talents notwithstanding, societal attitudes often discriminate and discourage the specially-abled from accomplishing anything. The socio-economic hurdles of domestic, occupational or professional lives continue to overwhelm the unfortunates...

While it is a fact that several of the illustrious were 'specially-abled', it may also be true that the resolve they put in must have been many times that of an able person. The likes of Dr. Stephen Hawkings or Helen Keller aren't very common, thus failing to represent the majority...

Having said that, shouldn't we admit that all of us are disabled or handicapped in some form or the other? The need for spectacles, hearing and walking aids, pacemakers, dental braces and so on depict our handicaps, all being just a matter of degree...

In addition to God's ways, as many tend to say so, disabilities occur due to various reasons such as genes, trauma, illnesses and medications and the like. While such things are beyond one's control, it would do a lot of good to everyone if each one of us could help support the specially-abled in our own small ways...

Making direct contact, making them feel equal and confident, listening and speaking to be understood, and respecting their personal space by inquiring of them before offering any help, are few basic courtesies one could think of...

We humans, full of flaws prone to err and sin, should realize the divinity in each one of us. Seek this divinity, and be surrounded by angels; keep seeing flaws in everyone, and be surrounded by devils. It is for us to choose...
