THE RATIONALISM CHAMPION

BERTRAND RUSSELL
(18 May 1872 – 2 Feb 1970)

A champion of rationalism, Englishman Bertrand Arthur William Russell, an accomplished thinker, scientist, educationist, an explicit writer and philosopher, was a staunch advocate of world peace as well... 

Rationalism is a line of thinking wherein life and existence are influenced by the respect for reason and logic rather than emotions or religious beliefs... 

Father of modern rationalism Rene Descartes was the person who shaped Russell’s thinking. Orphaned at the age of four and brought up by his grandmother, Russell, turning a blind eye to politics, engaged himself in scholarly academic pursuits and writings... 

Writer-creator of innumerable masterpieces and the Nobel Laureate of 1950 for literature, Russell was a recipient of several national and international awards, including the 'Order of Merit' in 1949 and the  UNESCO Kalinga Prize in 1957... 

Having founded the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in 1958, Russell was an advocate of the concept of a world government to prevent a nuclear catastrophe, when the Cold War was in vogue... 

Russell’s forays into the study of human thought process helped develop a rational approach to life. For him veracity and compassion were the two non-negotiable tools for a prosperous world. He believed that modern science and technology would reduce human suffering only if accompanied by a sense of sympathy and righteousness... 

So, if rationalism in Russell's own words, "the longing for love, the search for knowledge and unbreakable pity for the suffering of mankind" could be adhered to, we might be able to possibly see a new world evolve amidst the turbulent times that we live in...
