TWO YEARS ON
A dubious distinction for a 'day', I thought, today being the 2nd anniversary of the beginning of the military struggle between the two largest European nations...
A tragedy that was allowed to happen according to many pundits, political maturity being found wanting post Cold War with regard to mutual regional security concerns, this conflict is unlikely to throw up a winner...
The invader's miscalculation of a quick victory and the spirited resistance by the invaded have led to a severe attritional, but sanguinous, stalemate over the past couple of months...
The obsession of a somewhat of a restoration of the erstwhile Soviet Union, both by power and area being the driving force, the invader seems to be waiting for the smaller nation to blink first, hoping for the US-NATO-West support to ebb away...
That being said, West's conservatives feel that the sanctions against Russia haven't been effective, and perhaps even failed. The conflict is a gentle reminder that the days of long-drawn out wars are far from over. Hence the need for peace talks and negotiations in earnest, at the earliest. All those involved, West, Europe, US and Russia, the main players clinging to their own issues, ought to get back to the table, for humanity's sake. For, there's another one waiting as well...
"War is a place where young people who don't know each other and don't hate each other, kill each other, based on decisions made by old people who know each other and hate each other, but don't kill each other."
~ Paul Valéry
