IN REMEMBRANCE OF A WAR

While the recalling of any war can never be a pleasant proposition, UN observes 8th and 9th of May, since 2005, as the Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation in honour of those who made the supreme sacrifice during the WW2...

History, the great teacher, is to be visited for learning and understanding. Though the narratives are usually from the winner's POV, no war really creates one. While both sides do count losses, the voice of the vanquished is often lost in the din...

Regarded as one of the most epic struggles for freedom in history, critical dissection of WW2 seems to be far from over lest we err yet again. In a nutshell, war is to be avoided at all costs, democracies need to be ready to resist aggression, and to wear scars with pride during handshakes with opponents...

Having said that one should realize the fragility of peace, for an aggressor can never be satisfied, and that there is nothing called a "final war" to end conflicts. While propaganda is just a tool to muster support, decision-making should be left to those with competence, and not necessarily just to those vested with power...

Apart from the fiscal aspects of any war, which should be a deterrent anyway, usage of force, despite diplomatic failure, can never be the first option, but only the last, if at all...

WW2 has had the ignominy of having the world know the heights of cruelty humans are capable of. The various camps catering to unimaginable annihilations, medical experiments on prisoners and brutality on civilians, all should invoke our conscience to ensure that the world would never witness such catastrophes ever again...

Even as things stand today, it would do us a lot of good to remember WW2. Time for us to empathize with the injured, to take pride in their spirit of sacrifice for our future. To ensure that their martyrdom doesn't go in vain we ought to create a new societal order sans conflicts and wars. It might not be easy, or a perfect world for that matter, but that should ideally be our dream and motto...
