The theme for 2024 is -
“United by the skin.”

In addition to MJ, Canadian model Winnie Harlow too deserves mention, having been in the forefront of the spread of it's awareness amongst the masses...

Skin, in it's various hues and textures, has got a lot to do with interpersonal acceptance and appreciation since long. Despite it being naive and innocuous, vitiligo's effects on the psyche makes it more than just skin deep...

An autoimmune depigmentation disorder, hereditary on occasions, vitiligo is basically non-contagious and benign. While reactions differ from person to person, quite a few are in general optimistically grateful for it's non-seriousness...

However, for some the negative mental effects of vitiligo can range from mild grief, anger, frustration, anxiety, loneliness, depression etc. Michigan's skin specialist, Dr. Iltefat Hamzavi, aptly termed the malady as “white patches on the skin that affect the soul.”...

Healthcare personnel, social workers, celebrities and the society as a whole could help raise awareness and show support for those affected and make a world of difference to those lives...

As against the days of the past, when it used to be a 'curse', awareness and the combined efforts of vitiligo advocates, charities, researchers and the online vitiligo community have made lives definitely more comforting...
