INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE - 2024
With the recent novel ways of maiming and effacing people from the planet's surface, in a specific part of the world as of now, we arrive at yet another International Day Of Peace, begun by the UN in 1982...
The theme for 2024 is -
'Cultivating a Culture of Peace.'
A frequently used term, 'peace' is something that defies being defined. With the current situations the world over, the common concept of "war vs peace" though apt, is not exhaustive. Considering the huge efforts that we need to face the various challenges, a new perspective of peace is perhaps necessary...
The world is faced with issues on several fronts, environmental health, depleting natural resources, increasing population, social disharmony, weaponisation to name a few, leading to political instability and conflicts...
We live in times where aggression has become a natural phenomenon for us, like a reflex, in response to disapproval or counter-arguments. While we perhaps succeed in our desires and ambitions, we also develop fears of losing them, leading to discontentment and exhaustion, much far from being peaceful...
Learning to be free from desires is learning how to be peaceful. The fewer desires you have, the happier you will be. We ought to seek 'peace' more than by just guns being quiet, but by ensuring that violence does not recur, ammunition does not fire again, economies get stronger, environments get preserved better, all leading to overall favourable outcomes in all aspects of life on this earth...
We mortals have hardly much time here. Like happiness, peace too is something that has to come from within. I go further to say that both complement one another. Innumerable messiahs have taught us that only through the path of love, empathy and humanitarian ideals can lasting peace be thought of...
Let us perform our duties with a sense of purpose, trust and cooperation for the benefit of everyone, for the cause of world peace; for, solutions can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace...
