INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

Started by the UN in 1967, International Literacy Day highlights the importance of literary education for one and all. In a time frame of over two centuries, the world progressively moved from a literacy rate of less than 15% in the 1820s to around less than 15% illiterate till date...

The theme for 2024 is -
'Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.”

Most of us would never know what illiteracy is. Suffice it to say that our lives, communities, nations, economies etc. are the results of literacy, the tool for impartment of knowledge that helps people progress regardless of all known barriers...

Coming to the quote alongside, while there are very few illiterate these days, everybody is probably ignorant to some extent. Being the antithesis of knowledge, ignorance isn’t always a bliss. The literate should always strive to stave off ignorance by way of continued reading - of uplifting works by wise writers - and assimilation, followed by appropriate actions and deeds. And like literacy, there is numeracy, the ability to work with numbers...

Literacy skills are essential at work, at teaching children, at being active community wise, at understanding health, at discretion, and above all at being aware of one's rights and duties...

While governments are duty-bound in this context, one could also try making a difference in the lives of the deprived. Collecting books to donate, tutoring a student in reading and writing, partnering with a literacy organization, making a donation - fiscal, time, or both - or starting a book club could be a few ideas to do justice in observance of this special day...
