TWENTY THREE YEARS ON
Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 WTC and Pentagon terror attacks. The world pays homage to all the innocent lives lost, and also to those who left us as a consequence of, till now. An incident that changed our world forever...
No one would have dreamt that the dawn this day in 2001 was to blot US's invinciblity as a super power, bidding adieu to around 3000 lives. The subsequent punitive invasion of two Middle East nations on the pretext of wiping out terrorism and WMDs, in addition to local development, didn't quite yield results as expected...
The then man-in-charge, fortunate to get a second term I thought, handed over plenty of work for three successive presidents to worry about. Although the immediate incumbent was successful in eliminating the alleged chief mastermind, the war was far from over...
For, after nearly 20 years of dormancy, the then ousted hardliner group clawed back to power in Afghanistan. And as the last US soldier left the region on Aug 31, 2021, the hearts of many locals must have been gladdened having avenged a retribution of a super power...
In an era of power struggle, a repeat 9/11 could still happen anywhere. And while the US has not experienced another similar attack on her soil, it forced several alterations in policies to thwart future attempts...
That being said, the global war against terror continues. In fact wouldn't be too wrong to say it has, in many ways, failed. Western Europe over the past decade has seen an alarming jihadist mobilization, and the ensuing fatalities have risen over the past decade...
From Vietnam to Afghanistan to Iraq, one needs to reconcile that local insurgencies have the capacity to thwart the most powerful of militaries. Nations would do well to drop their overconfidence that they may have and refrain from such misadventures in the future...
They say, never begin a venture if one isn't too sure of negotiating through the endgame...
Prayers once again for all the 9/11 victims.
May the Almighty rest their souls in everlasting peace...
