INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

The Beijing Declaration during the 1995 World Conference on Women, in the city by the same name, can be said to be the first of it's kind to specifically attend to the issue of girls’ rights. The UNGA took it up seriously as late as 19 December 2011, and thus the first International Day Of The Girl Child was born in 2012...

The theme for 2024 is -
"Girls' Vision for the Future."

Discrimination against the girl child continues around the world in the 21st century as well, by way of gender oppression, exploitation and subservience. Also, three potentially lethal practices exist still in certain regions viz. female infanticide, female genital mutilation, and honour killing...

The day underlines the need to recognize girls’ rights and aspirations, the several challenges they face, and to promote their empowerment globally amidst various challenges such as conflicts, poverty, climate change etc. In this context, world digitalization has been thought to have widened the gender gap...

Equal access to education, healthcare, learning of skills and opportunities safeguards against gender based violence and discrimination. That said, a lot leaves to be desired as far as freedom from all forms of exploitation, harassment and crimes against the girl child are concerned...

The day thus could act as a reminder in requesting various governments and societies to galvanize efforts in earnest in the form of reformative policies and programmes to ensure a fair and level playing field...

While the concept (menace) of discrimination due to patriarchal preponderance is certainly flawed in my opinion, I wouldn’t hesitate to mention that the girl child, the precursor of mankind, is here not just to do everything a man can, but to also do what he cannot...

Best Wishes...
