UNITED NATIONS DAY



Today, 24th October 2024, marks the 79th anniversary of the United Nations, it's Charter coming into being this day in 1945...

"United Nations", as proposed by late Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 1, 1942 with 51 members, is now a General Assembly of 193 member nations. With a primary role to maintain world peace and security, inter-nation relations and cooperation, and justice could be said to be it's other functions...

The second UN S-G Dag Hammarskjöld had said that the UN “was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell.” Well, be that as it may, we have not had a WW since 1945, thankfully...

For an institution formed post WW2 to prevent such misadventures and act as a custodian of multilateralism, it’s gradual ineffectiveness is rather disconcerting. The UN today is highly under pressure due to the power struggle, for none of the important players would prefer to be bound by the system...

Right from it's inception, the permanency and veto power in the UNSC vested upon few nations gave it a lopsided appearance. In the wake of conflicts, decisions of the UNGA needing the nod of the UNSC in many ways perhaps defeated it's purpose. The current situations in the war-torn areas of Europe and the Middle East are there for the world to see...

There is a view that "UN" is a misnomer. For, governments of various hues and ideologies - not nations - use the UN for their own ends, which if allowed to continue unbridled would reduce it's sanctity and importance...

While the UN is an important forum amidst international chaos, it warrants reforms to become more effective and trustworthy. Troubled by conflicts, climate change, depleting natural resources, disruptive technologies, socio-economic issues etc., all recognize the need for stronger global fairplay control and cooperation...

While the UN has certainly done commendable work on several fronts, paradoxically it has been found wanting on few issues mentioned above, giving a feeling of waning relevance...

Nations being bigger than it's governments, the UN ought to find ways and means to broaden it's scope for the array of participants who can help deal with the world’s many crises, befitting it's purpose once again...

WORLD BRAIN DAY

22nd of July is observed as World Brain Day since 2014. The day was chosen during the 21st World Congress of Neurology held in Vienna on September 22, 2013 under the aegis of World Federation of Neurology, which incidentally was also formed on 22 July, in 1957... INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY

November 8th is observed as International Day Of Radiology as a tribute to the great German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen for his discovery of X-Rays in 1895.. The 1845 born Nobel Laureate of 1901, Röntgen majored in Physics and completed his PhD at the University of Zurich.. Discovering X-rays accidentally while using cathode rays for images of his wife’s hand, which depicted the bones and the wedding ring, Röntgen had made a giant leap for mankind in medical diagnosis.. International Day of Radiology (IDoR) was first celebrated in the year 2012 with the combined efforts of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR)..
