THOUSAND DAYS' WAR
This day, in 1902, saw the end of the historical "Thousand Days' War" in Columbia, a civil one at that, between the ruling conservatives and the plantation-based liberals. A similar one for the 21st century has just been sounded...
While there have been several conflicts since then lasting years, the current war in Europe joined the 'elite club' a few days back. A conflict which was to get over in a few days, in the then opinion of the aggressor, the resilience of the oppressed despite unimaginable suffering has been remarkable...
While for Ukraine the war had begun way back in 2014, the present conflict brought to the fore the humanitarian issues since then. "Double-tap" strikes and wilful destruction of energy systems by the aggressor have thrown up sets of logistical challenges for the third winter in a row. Though EU aid and support in all possible aspects continue, international attention on the conflict appears to be on the wane...
Apart from the loss of lives and unsettling of economies, the conflict has led to 'world division' of sorts. Heavy sanctions not having affected the economy of the aggressor much, West's support has kept the fortunes of the oppressed alive...
Ukraine's recent use of US and UK missiles and her grievance of Russia's retaliation with an ICBM begs the question as to where is the war headed. While Ukraine appears to be unable to reclaim her lost territory, and Russia not really being in a position to eliminate Ukraine from the world map - the objective of the war - peaceful stalemate could perhaps be the only viable option...
Easier said than done though. The will to reconcile to a lasting peace on the part of the aggressor on the one hand, and continued West's support for Ukraine’s future, including EU membership, on the other are essential but contentious propositions. But if they do happen, would augur well for both nations and the world. Let's keep our fingers crossed...
