Sweden's Alfred Bernhard Nobel, a chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist with 87 companies and 355 patents worldwide including dynamite, bequeathed his entire wealth as prizes to be awarded to those who had done their best to benefit humankind in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace...

In 1901, the Nobel Prize committee awarded the first prizes five years after Nobel’s death, due to the controversy surrounding his will. Another prize was added in 1969, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic sciences...

Between 1901 and 2024 the world has seen Nobel Prizes being awarded 627 times to 976 individuals and 28 organisations...

The winners, announced by the committee in October each year, gather for the event in Stockholm (except Peace) to receive their prizes from the Swedish King, which comprises of a Nobel diploma, a medal, and 10 million Swedish crowns per prize. The recipient of the Peace Prize receives the award in Oslo, Norway...

Emil von Behring (Physiology or Medicine), Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (Physics), René François Armand "Sully" Prudhomme (Literature), and Frédéric Passy and Jean Henry Dunant sharing the Peace prize...
