WORLD EARTH DAY 2025
Today marks the 55th anniversary of World Earth Day, it having begun in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson (4 Jun 1916 - 3 Jul 2005) and environmentalist Denis Hayes (b. 29 Aug 1944). The former is known as the "father of Earth Day".
The day is to motivate people to ensemble in their respective nations with an aim to better our planet challenged by several pressing issues. The day is also to check our actions vis a vis the various natural systems in place, to take collective responsibility, and course corrections if need be.
The theme for 2025 is -
"Our Power, our Planet.”
A beckoning call to be sensitive to the burning issues like climate change, pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity etc. to name a few...
It is heartening that many nations are beginning to expedite the processes for renewable energy sources to tackle its fossil fuel dependency. The EU's 'Green Deal’ proposal of 2019 in the European Parliament to become the first "climate-neutral bloc" by 2050 being a case in point...
There are countless ways for us to observe this day. Planting trees, clean-up drives of litter and plastic waste from public places, educational seminars on renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, environmental hygiene, minimalistic efforts of usage of resources - reduce, reuse, recycle - etc...
The official ambassador for the Day is the 41-year-old American actress, singer and environmentalist, Ms. Antonique Smith. Beginning her crusade in 2014, she is the co-founder and CEO of Climate Revival, a nonprofit community tackling climate change issues. Ms. Smith will have her performance at New York’s Times Square today...
Remember, we all have just one Earth in common to survive, something that we carry on from our ancestors, to be handed over to our children. Losing ourselves in nature is the best way to develop our collective obligation towards the planet where we all live, for the biggest blunder is to imagine that someone else would rescue Mother Earth...
I often imagine Mother Earth trying to convey the message to us all, "your work and pastime with ammunition singes me into despair...😑😑"
