AN ATTACK FROM THE SEA

Today marks the 17th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, regarded as India's counterpart of US's 11/9. Though the US has not seen a repetition, events on a smaller scale continue to trouble other parts of the world...

The 'blitzkrieg' that emerged from the Arabian Sea on that fateful evening in 2008 under the cover of darkness, stuporosed the nation. It also bore testimony to a sad fact that despite the brazen 11/9 attack and seven years prior, terrorists were still not termed as enemies of all mankind...

Despite few global powers reluctantantly agreeing to the possibly dubious role played by the ISI, the answer to the question of what should be the international community’s response to another 'Mumbai' still remains elusive...

It is said that the seeds of terrorism were sown by Operation Cyclone, with the emergence of Afghan Mujahideen in 1979, to counter communist influence in the Middle East. The ensuing low profile conflicts over the next decade, which claimed over a million lives, threw up the Al Qaeda and the Taliban, which 'mitotically' evolved into a humanitarian threat...

While virtues, behaviours and terrorism have no religion, those with these can. The world still needs a pluralistic society with hatemongers being dealt with severely and religion be made a personal choice...

Motives like religion, nationalism, injustice or vendetta apart, studies point to the struggle for resources, in most cases due to climate change, population explosion, and a demographic younger ambitious population. Despite all efforts by global peacelovers - that if everyone’s needs are met, wars and terrorism could end - there will always exist people wanting more power, wealth, territory and everything, qualmless of resorting to violence. Possibly a menacing malady that we have to reconcile with for a long long time to come...

Respects and homages to all our martyrs...
