THE CRUSADER OF NON-VIOLENCE
Today is the 78th Punyatithi of an icon of India's freedom movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an embodiment of simplicity in all senses of all it's terms...
MK Gandhi existed in a different era, in a less technology driven world, and in a different socio-political scenario. One would do well to go back in time to that cold day of 7th June 1893, Pietermaritzburg Railway Station, South Africa, from where it all began for the then practicing barrister MK Gandhi...
MKG, along with a chosen few, has been the butt of criticism and ridicule in our nation over the past decade or so. MKG has been pilloried not only for not overcoming all the tribulations of his times, but for leaving unsolved the problems of the present as well. Thus to re-examine his contribution and legacy in hindsight, with a microscope in hand, is simply being uncharitable to say the least...
One may or may not like him, may or may not agree with his decisions and philosophies, but he has his rightful niche carved in the history of the world, his persona conspicuously found amongst other great souls like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and so on...
Try as much as one can, no amount of ridicule can reverse the position MKG holds in the global scenario. The frail man in a loin cloth with a stick in hand may not have been wrong; he wasn’t perfect; but then who is? Do we all meet our own standards? MKG was incomplete, like many of us, but again, more accomplished than most of us...
It would be almost impossible for us lesser mortals to ever emulate MKG in his simplicity, or even come near the foothills of the mountains that he had conquered in his lifetime...
While it is almost certain that we may never see the likes of MKG walk this way again, let us hope for the day when there is no violence, and when conflicts and disputes could be resolved peacefully. This would be the only befitting tribute to the great soul...
