FIFTY FIVE YEARS AGO

Close on the heels of India's entry into the ICC T20 finals yesterday, pipping England to the post, today marks the fifty-fifth debut anniversary of a legend who would become a household name in the cricketing world till eternity, none other than Mr. Sunil Manohar Gavaskar, who donned the India cap, this day, 1971, at Port Of Spain...

His journey from the school Harris Shield and Giles Shield to the Test arena encompassed the following First-class teams as well, viz. Vazir Sultan Colt's XI, Associated Cement Company (ACC) XI, U-Foam XI, Bombay, West Zone, Rest of India, Board President's XI, Indian Universities, Rest of the World and Somerset...

In a national career that spanned 16 years, the ‘Little Master’ not only saw many records tumbling, but helped in instilling a new confidence in Indian cricket. Regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen to have graced the cricket pitch, his grit, finesse and patience could perhaps have just about been equalled only by an another great exponent, Sir Michael Colin Cowdrey...

Inarguably being one of the most wonderful things to have happened to cricket in India, every performance of his, not just the 34 tons, was worth it's weight in the collections that made up our indelible memories...

The world may undoubtedly see quite a few players who could surpass a few of his feats, but when one thinks of the Mt. Everest, it is but natural to remember Sir. Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay...

Thank you so much Mr. Gavaskar, for having enthralled us all during your playing days, and also with your insights during current times...

💐💐🙏  🇮🇳
